Ear-buds of Music - 31/5/2016

Image
Of all the topics regarding entertainment that I have covered in my blog thus far, of course along with all those random stuff in between too, I have always stayed away from one topic. While I have not spoken about this thing much, it plays a really important role in my life. I go to sleep and wake up to it. It’s with me pretty much all the time. If you still haven’t figured it out, the thing I am talking about is music. There is a specific reason why I don’t talk about music. It is probably the most subjective of all forms of art out there. Nobody can actually define what good music is. It’s all a matter of what someone likes. I can guarantee that no two people will have the exact same taste in music. Before I get to the main part of the article, I want to write about some of my experiences with music. Some people may know this and others may not, my family has had a long history with music. My grandfather has made music for stage plays and movies. My Dad makes his living...

Trial and Error : Of Hair Bands, Mechanical Bulls and Cosmic Entities

Image
“Come on Sis! I want to do hoops and bottles.” My nine year old brother shouted impatiently as he started dragging me by the hem of my shirt towards the stalls. “Steven, do you really have to drag me?” I sighed as I followed behind him, pushing my unruly hair out of my hair. As Steven continued to drag me across the carnival grounds towards the hoops and bottles stall, I began pondering about my existence in this universe. Why did I, in all my seventeen year old teen glory, have to be dragged around by my brother at the exact same moment when the performer on the stilts happened to drop the ball he had been juggling? Was it all a coincidence, or had it all been planned beforehand by an all powerful Cosmic Entity? But one thing I was sure was not a coincidence, was the lack of hair bands in the vicinity. They always seemed to disappear when I needed them the most. As my mind wandered back and forth between cosmic riddles and glow in the dark hair bands, a new question popp...

The Dramatic Arts : Parthiban Kanavu

Parthiban Kanavu is the latest adaptation, of the novel written by Kalki by Ajay entertainers. This along with Shivagamiyin Sabatham and Ponnian Selvan combine to form what I call the unofficial ‘’ Kalki trilogy ” from this troupe. Directed, once again, by D Mallik Raj and written for the stage by Kavingar Poovai Dhaya,  Parthiban Kanavu continues the tales of some of the characters from Shivagmiyin Sabatham and also their future generations. While it is not as masterful as their previous two ventures, Parthiban Kanavu is still an enjoyable experience. Direction  - D Mallikraj Co - Direction  - G Saravanan Story, Dialogues  - Kavingyar Poovai Dhaya Music Production - Alex Sets  - Baalan Costumes  - Thangapandiyan / Raja/ Clara Make-up  - Doss Lights  - Govindan, Mano Lights Technical Assiastance  - Ishwarya Cast  - Ra Nadanasabapathy, Jagadeesan, Girish, Raghavan, Praka...

The Dramatic Arts : Sivagamiyin Sabadham

Image
The cast of Shivagamiyin Sapadham . Sivagamiyin Sabadham is a play based on the novel of the same name written by Amarar Kalki, brought to stage by the spectacular people of Ajay Entertainers, who brought Ponnian Selvan to stage yesterday. Those of you who read my review will know that I liked the drama very much, and since this is a play by the same group, the natural question to ask would be, is Sivagamiyin Sabadham as good as Ponnian Selvan ? In short, the answer is yes. But stick with me, because that yes is not so clear cut. Sivagamiyin Sabadham is directed by D Mallik Raj and produced by Ajay entertainers, and while it doesn’t contain much in the way of a complex plot, it is once again the actors who shine in a very faithful adaptation of the original work. Direction - D Mallikraj Assistant Direction - G Saravanan Story, Dialogues - Kavingyar Poovai Dhaya Music Production - Alex Sets - Baalan Costumes - Thangapandiyan...

The Dramatic Arts : Ponnian Selvan

Image
The Cast of Ponnian Selvan Ponnian Selvan , a drama by Ajay Entertainers, written and directed by Thambi Paneerselvan and D Mallikraj respectively, is an adaptation of a five part historical fiction novel of the same name written by Kalki. While the play takes certain liberties with the story, tweaking it in such a way that the intricate story can be done justice on stage, Ponnian Selvan manages to be a faithful adaptation. The actors and actresses of Ajay Entertainers bring to life an epic tale of politics and intrigue in artful fashion, working their way around limitations and putting together a brilliant show, rather than using said limitations as an excuse to deliver a shoddy play. Direction - D Mallikraj Story, Dialogues - Thambi Pannerselvam Music Production- Alex Sets - Baalan Costumes - Thangapandiyan / Clara Make-up - Doss Lights - Govindan Cast - Muthukumar, Jagadeesan, Girish, Raghavan, Prakash kutti, Janardhanan, Saravanan, Suresh, A S Jayaraman...

The Dramatic Arts : Yaar Paiyan

Image
A still from Yaar Paiyan. Photo source : Paperless musings . Yaar Paiyan is a stage play from the drama troupe Kalanilayam which was inaugurated in the year 2012, and has been brought back to stage as a tribute to ‘Kalaimamani’ K S Nagarajan’s hundredth birthday celebrations. ‘Kalaimamani’ K S Nagarajan founded Kalanilayam in 1960 and has played a very important role in the evolution of the drama industry. Yaar Paiyan , written and directed by KSN Sundar, tells the story of a man, who finds out that he has been adopted and searches for a way to reconnect with his father. While the premise may sound simple, it is the complex characters and the performances, which bring the emotional core of the play to the fore front. What I Liked: The performances in this play are amazing to say the least. Baskar as the titular character Sridhar shines in every scene, displaying a wide range of emotions from childish happiness to rightful anger. KSN Sundar brings grace and gentl...

Random Talk : Anime

Image
This is an article which I have been meaning to write for a really long time but for some reason I have never really gotten to it. (Let’s be honest here, it is part laziness.) But now that I have gotten into it, I intend to fully discuss it. As an avid movie junkie something which has baffled me for a really long time, three years to be exact, is the lack of appreciation people have for the Anime community, both casual movie goers and more serious ones. People who know me personally know that my dad watches a lot of movies too and when I asked if he would consider watching an anime movie, he shrugged it off saying that it was basically cartoons for kids. This is, what I think, the inherent misconception that a lot of movie goers have. That anime is a cartoon. That anime is for kids. When in reality, anime is much more than that. Yes there are certain anime which are meant for kids but the majority of anime are made for adults and young adults. It is a, strangely undi...

Movie Review : Zootopia

Image
Zootopia is one of those rare movies which, although marketed as a children’s movie, it appeals to adults as well. This movie is proves that Walt Disney Animation is back and as good as ever. The reason why Zootopia appeals to adults is because it deals with complex issues of racism, sexism, friendships, relationships and, oddly enough, even drugs. All of this while still appealing to kids. You may be wondering if that is even possible, because every children's movie now-a -days seem to be getting dumber and dumber to the point where it is considered funny when characters say a one letter word and laugh. Well I'm here to tell you that it is possible, and Zootopia is a prime example of that.  So on to the review Story and Writing: Zootopia tells the tale of a bunny named Judy Hopps, who becomes the first rabbit police officer of  zootopia where all animals live in harmony, both predator and prey. The story follows her and a fox, Nick Wilde who also happ...

The Dramatic Arts : Girivalam

Image
Many times, as a person who reviews art on the internet, I have to take into account the fact that every person has a different opinion about what is makes a piece of art good . This means that I may have to pull some punches in the negatives department because I set a really high standard (for example I hate ‘ masala ’ movies) and everyone may not agree with them. But once in a while something like Girivalam comes along, and I can’t help but let loose all of my frustration. So before I go any further I would like to formally apologize for all the hate in this “review”. Now that that’s out of the way *Cracks Knuckles*; this stage play is, to me, everything that is wrong with the drama industry. It is a poor excuse for a play, which has no right to be on stage in front of an audience, parading itself as if it’s the best thing to happen to live theater since its invention. It is an uncoordinated, unrehearsed, unplanned, unpleasant, unforgivable stinking hot mess, which came...
