Anime Addiction: Anthem of the Heart

Image
Anthem of the Heart is written by Mari Odawa, directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai and produced by A-1 Pictures , is part high school drama and part musical which tells the story of a girl whose voice is taken away because of a curse and follows her as she rediscovers it through music. While the premise of the movie seemed a bit on the eccentric side, the characters, the story, the themes and the artwork completely won me over. The main theme of the story is words. The story deals with words both said and unsaid and how it affects both the person who says them and the person whom it is said to. The main character is a girl named Naruse and we follow her journey from being a girl who barely speaks to a girl who faces her fears and overcomes them. The character arc in itself is very beautiful and brilliantly handled. The movie plays a lot with metaphors and, although there seems to be a villain in the story, there isn’t one character that seems too fantastical. The animation is...

Anime Addiction: Anohana - The Flower We Saw That Day

Image
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai and is produced by A-1 Pictures and it is a eleven episode series which follows a group of friends who have drifted apart over time and how the ghost of one of their childhood companion, appears and they must help her move on to heaven, and in a way move on from her death themselves. I started watching Anohana just out of sheer curiosity because this is not exactly a new premise, but I wanted to see an anime take it on. What followed was four hours of pure beauty, compassion, smiles and a lot of tears. I will be upfront about this show. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day made me cry like little child. I started watching the show at eight in the night and while I did finish the series at around twelve, I didn’t go to sleep till two, because I was too busy being emotionally drained. The premise is a very simple one, but the way the story itself unfolds is nothing short of magical. There is not one ep...

Anime Addiction: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Image
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress brought to us by basically the same team which made Shingeki no Kyogin (Attack on Titan) and to put it quite frankly it is a slightly sub-par clone of the same show. But the thing is; I had so much fun with it that I watched all the eleven episodes in one sitting, which approximately comes to about four hours. The premise of Kabaneri , lo-and-behold, the same as the premise of Attack on Titan ; humanoid monsters, in this case zombies or Kabane, have invaded the earth and humanity has built small cities surrounded by walls in different areas connected by trains which transport supplies and weapons. The zombies are really difficult to kill because their, very much exposed, hearts are covered by a really strong metal cage for some reason. That is the basic premise of the story. But here is the thing, the only reason that a story exists in the first place is so that cool shit can happen on screen. The setting is feudal Japan but it is the st...

Random Talk : Co-Authors, Editing and games?... Woah!!!

Image
While witty beginnings to a post aren’t uncommon for me, some posts require a more straightforward approach. As an introduction to this article, I need to introduce one of my close friends. He is average, average, average and, overall just “Meh”. But all jokes and teasing aside, his name is Asim Nath and he is an avid gamer. Quite possibly a bigger one than me, but we have our opinions and squabbles. One thing we can agree on is that he has more hours logged in games and I have played more games than him, just for a shorter time per game. Anyway, I got an interesting phone call from him today and we talked for about half an hour; regarding a post he has written. To transcribe the abridged version of our talk, he wanted me to share his post in my blog because this was his first stab at writing a post like this and also because of some other reason I seem to forget... what was it, now... Yup! Because I am plain AWESOME!! Ok he didn’t exactly say that, but one can ass...

Random Talk : Update 4

Image
Since I don’t really have a witty statement to begin this post with I’ll just get into it. First off, to the regular readers of my blog I want to thank you. You are some of the most amazing people in the word. You may be wondering why I am thanking you out of nowhere. This is because this blog hit 10,000 views. I know that that is not much, but I am happy that I was able to reach that milestone. When I started this out I didn’t even think my work would be worth 1000 people, let alone 10,000. But that’s what makes this milestone so special. Moving on to more serious topics, I want to discuss certain things, which I am sure that most of you are going to remain silent on. Not because it is controversial because while 10,000 of you have read my blog, only seventy five of you have commented which is not a lot. But I am not complaining. Partly because I am happy that people are reading, and also partly because, I know many people don’t have that big of an attention span t...

The Dramatic Arts : Endrum Anbudan

Endrum Anbudan, performed by Sowmya Theaters and  written and directed by TV Radhakrishnan, hails itself as the one play dedicated to the father among the plethora of plays which are dedicated to the mother. So much so in fact, there aren’t any lady artists in the play. Summing up the plot in a few words is a difficult task because it is a very simple story involving father, his two sons and two of the fathers close friends. The meat of the play is obtained from the emotional effects of certain events on the father and the sons and also from the light hearted humor sprinkled in between. So without any further ado let us jump right into the analysis. Story/Direction - TV Radhakrishnan Set - Saidai Kumar/Shanmugam Make up - Perambur Kumar Light and music -Kalaivanar kicha Special voice for father -Railway Anand. Cast - Ramani-as Doctor, Sriram ramani-as elder son Manoj, Girish venkat-as younger son Shankar, MB moorthy- as friend Cheenu, P.T.Ramesh -as fa...

The Dramatic Arts : Vinai

Before I begin, I want to warn you that this review will not follow my regular format. That is because Vinai is not, strictly speaking, a stage play. Vinai falls under the category of Koothupattarai. For those of you who aren’t aware, Koothupattarai is a play which is performed in very small halls, on the floor and they involve very little in terms of props, sets, costumes and makeup. Vinai, directed by Icarr, is not your regular play which deals with simple subject. Without going into much detail it is a psychological crime thriller, and it doesn’t shy away from really mature topics, which aren’t generally used as themes in a traditional drama.  This play has, hands down, the best acting I have seen in a very long time. And to top it off, the standard of acting is the same for all the actors. The technical term for a drama performer is “Dramatist Persona”. The general meaning is that the actors aren’t acting but rather imitating and inhabiting the characters. Even th...

The Dramatic Arts : Vikatakavi Tenaliraman

Written and directed by Srirangam Rangamani and produced by R Srinavasan, Vikatakavi Tenaliraman is marketed as a purposeful play which, as the name suggests, is a compilation of the famous stories of Tenali Raman and his sharp wit. I am going to be very honest here, like I always am and following a trend I set in my previous review I am going to point out the negatives and the number of points I will be deducting for each of them. Without further ado, here are the positives and the negatives of the play. Direction – Srirangam Rangamani Scene set & costumes – Padma Stage Kannan BGM – Anand Subramanian Make up – Kumar Lights – Mano Lights Sounds – BV Bhavan Photos & videos – Malar Stills(R.Saravanan) Production Manager – Venkat Production – R.Srinivasan (MCA) Cast Dr.Giri(Tenali Raman), Kala Nilayam Chandru(Babar), Prakash(Krishna Deva Rayar), Karpagavalli(Vasudha), Mohanraj (Raja Guru), ,Ramani (Minister ), Edhayachandran (pandithar(Oris...

Movie Review : Independence Day Resurgance

Image
Ok screw this, I’m just going to come out and say it. Independence Day resurgence is complete and utter garbage. There is your review. Until next time; Peace!!! _ _ _ _ _ _ What are you still here? I just reviewed the whole movie. It is garbage. _ _ _ *Sigh* Fine I’ll go into a bit more detail. But please do not expect my usual format because I don’t have the patience to dissect this movie any further. Independence Day Resurgence is set twenty years after the original movie and it is basically the story of how the aliens come back for another round of ass kicking from America, the greatest country in the history of the universe. I will be the first person to admit that I like bad action movies. But here is the thing, most bad action movies are fun to watch. Most actors in a bad action movie know that they are in a bad action movie and they have a hell of a time on screen. Take London has Fallen for example. It is a really bad movie. But I ...

The Dramatic Arts : Kalyana Samayal Boodham

Image
Written and directed by CV Chandramohan and produced by P S Raja, Kalyana Samayal Boodham is a comedy play involving an old grandfather clock, a genie, a retired father and an unmarried son. Okay, I just said all that to make it seem as abstract as possible, but the reason I did that is because I don’t want to reveal any part of the story so you can experience it yourself. From what I know it has been quite some time since Chandramohan has directed a comedy play, but this play proves that Chandramohan’s sharp dialogues extend not only to sentimental and dramatic plays, but also comedic ones. I am going to be doing something different here; I am going to be explaining how I deduct points for the negatives in the play. This is not to stress on them, but just so that the mistakes can be identified clearly and they can be corrected in the following shows. Alright then, on to the review. Story Screenplay and Direction - C V Chandramohan Music - Guhaprasath Set Desig...

Movie Review : The Legend of Tarzan

Image
The Legend of Tarzan is directed by David Yates and stars Alexander Sarsgard, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L Jackson. Instead of telling the known story of Tarzan and his growth in the jungle, The Legend of Tarzan tells a story where Tarzan has been living in England for ten years with Jane, and chooses to tell the classic story through flashbacks. While nothing ground breaking, The Legend of Tarzan is a completely enjoyable movie with really good visuals which can be enjoyed by almost anybody. Story and Writing: The story is not anything completely new, and it does follow certain long held tropes of damsels in distress and revenge plots. But there is no weak link in the story. It serves as an excellent reason to get the characters to where they need to be. The dialogues are done well, with Tarzan’s lines having a British flair while still retaining a bit of unrefined accent, probably form the years spent in the jungle. There are a lot of funny lines ...

Random Talk : of Events and Perspectives

Image
Three days ago both my mom and dad posted some information on their respective Facebook pages and the post grabbed a lot of attention. I will go about explaining the posts later, but before that I want to explain some of the events which occurred to me before and after my twelfth results. I am not explaining this because I am trying to validate my choices or because I am trying to explain why I made the choices that I did. My choices are my decisions and I believe I don’t have to explain myself to anyone. But I am doing this because the past few months have been pivotal in my life and I want to share them with you. I want to share the fact that while I post a lot about my achievements in life, how I got a press card or how I enjoyed myself in a movie, there are a lot of things which I don’t write about. Particularly about my failures and about the days where I felt very down trodden because I failed to achieve something. With that particularly long paragraph, let me begin a chron...
