Random Talk: Best recent commercial Indian films

Image
Many people think that I am unfair towards Indian movies and in most of the cases this is true. This is not because I don't like Indian directors or because I am not used to watching Indian movies. This is simply because there are not really that many good films in the Indian film market. This is mainly because we, as Indians, refuse to think out of this small box created by cultural restrictions. That and the need to see scantily clad women, on screen begging to be rescued by the all powerful gravity defying hero. If you think I am wrong then please tell me how many heroines who appear on screen today can actually act. Probably about six or seven. And that is if I am being optimistic. Unfortunately this has led to a dumber audience. We have lowered our expectations so much, that we go to the theaters to watch our favorite heroes take on similar roles, speak punch lines and rescue said women, than to actually care about the characters and invest in the story. Le...

Trial and Error: Unchained

Image
This is my third short story that I have posted guys and the first one I have posted that is my own brain-child. Please do keep in mind, that this story is very dark, and may be uncomfortable for some people to read. That being said, please let me know what you guys think, and I will see you guys tomorrow, with at least another three new articles!! Peace.               The room smelled of death. No no, it reeked of death. Wading through the ankle high water, the detective shone his  flash-light  into the darkest corners of the basement, hoping to find at least a part of a body that wasn't rotten. It seemed hopeless. This hell hole had been sealed up and flooded for who knows how long. The deeper he went into the darkness the stronger the stench became.            The detective had seen a lot of macabre things in his life. Bloated bodies? Yup. Burnt? Sure. Mutilated? Frequently. But then th...

Movie Review: Lucy

Image
Lucy is a science fiction film written and directed by Luc Besseon. It stars Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman and a few other people who you might recognize. Point is Scarlett Johansson is the only character who matters. This review is going to be different from my other reviews. I won’t be splitting it into sections. It is just going to be a review with a verdict at the end. You may think this is because I am lazy, but this is actually because this film doesn’t have a plot. Yup, there is no story to the movie. The movie purely exists to show Scarlett Johansson do cool stuff as her brain capacity increases from 10 percent to 20 to 30 to 40 and finally 100. That is basically the story. There is a small subplot, but I stick with what is said in the beginning, this movie exists purely so that we can see Scarlett Johansson kick ass. The cinematography is good and the CGI is, at best, okay. Again it all ties into the fact that there is no story to relate all the v...

Movie Review: Begin Again

Image
Begin again is a 2013 musical drama written and directed by John Carney. It stars Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightly, Adam Levine and Hailee Steinfield. This is John Carneys second musical, after his award-winning musical romance “Once”, and although not as good as “Once” was, it is a film definitely worth checking out. I particularly liked this movie because it almost accurately portrays what goes on in the music industry. As a person who comes from a family of musicians, I know what goes on behind all the cameras and fame. There are literally thousands of people who deserve a shot at success but aren’t allowed one because what they do isn’t trendy enough, or it isn’t something which the crowd listens to. But this talk is for another article, o...

Movie Review: Interstellar

Image
Interstellar is a science fiction movie written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher Nolan .(Yup, they are brothers) It stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, and *spoiler alert!!* Matt Damon. This is Nolan’s first outing as a science fiction director, and to say the least he has done a fantastic job. There are so many great things about this movie, that they mostly outweigh the negatives. But keep in mind, Nolan Fans, this movie does have a few negatives. So please don’t expect me to shower praise endlessly, I will be stating what I didn’t like about the film. SCREENPLAY This movie has a really good screenplay, and not one dialogue seemed out of place or unnecessary, or like it was exposition, for that matter. The banter between the protagonists is realistic, and there are a few well written jokes, which I liked. One thing I really liked was the father daughter dynamic between the character Murphy, and her father, Cooper. And most ...

The Russian’s bullet hit its mark. The scuffle had given the others a chance to escape. She tried to follow. She felt the Russian hit her. She fell down tasting blood. “Don’t you fucking move.” He said and went after the others. She had to escape. She struggled to her feet and moved into the shadows of the trees. Evading the searchlights she entered the village. The village burnt by the Russian and his me...

Trial and Error: The Sniper

Image
So this is a new addition to my blog. I am trying my hand at writing short stories, and mainly translating other media to writing. The following is loosely based on the trailer for The American Sniper. No plagiarism intended. All rights go to the respective studios. Please don’t sue me; I don’t really have that much pocket money. Tell me what you think guys and if you want me to pen down a particular scene of your liking please let me know, I would love to try it. Let me know your Thoughts below. Disclaimer: I do not own American sniper. All rights go to the respective studios. The scope of his rifle pressed against the sniper’s brow, but he hardly noticed this as he shifted to a more comfortable position. His spotter who was kneeling beside him stiffened. “Man on a phone, Balcony. One o clock” He almost whispered to the sniper. The sniper refocused on the potential threat and followed his targets movements with a practiced eye. When it moved inside the safety of the hou...

Book Review: The Blood Of Olympus

Image
It’s the end of the series guys, and here I am reviewing it. So The Blood of Olympus is the last book in the wonderful Heroes of Olympus series written by Rick Riordan, and it concludes the story of Percy, Annabeth, Jason, Piper, Frank, Hazel, Leo, Reyna and Nico. I am not going to reveal any important plot points and spoil the story, but I’m just going to tell you what I liked and didn’t like about the book. Pros:                  It is a great conclusion to the series. It has a spectacular climax; it ties up all the loose ends, and should satisfy most of the fans of the series. The writing is especially witty, and the humor is great, and surprisingly, there are a lot of emotional themes behind it all, and Riordan conveys them very well. What I really liked about the book is that it cut to the action, and did not make us wait. I mean, we have waited for four books, so I have to give props for that. It also does a good job...

Random Talk: The end of a true Saga…

Image
As I sit here typing this, anxiously waiting for The Blood of Olympus to be delivered to me tomorrow, I cannot help, but fell torn. Why would I feel torn, you might ask, well is simply because, tomorrow, by this time, I will be holding the end of a series, that is very close to my heart. If you do not know what I am talking about, then let me clarify… The Blood of Olympus is the last book in the Heroes of Olympus series, written by Rick Riordan, or as I would like to call him, Uncle Rick. Now, Heroes of Olympus is the continuation of the previous series titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians . If you haven’t read either of the series, I suggest you do so immediately. I say that this series is close to my heart, because of one reason, I have committed to it, in a way I haven’t to any other. I have waited year after year, to read the next book. I waited a year to read the Son of Neptune . I waited a year to read The Mark of Athena . I waited another to read the House ...

Random talk: Women and Movies…

Image
Last Friday Mardaani hit theaters all across India. I didn’t hear about this movie, until I saw the poster in today’s Newspaper, and it got me thinking. I went to YouTube and checked out the trailer, and from what I have seen, it has the makings of a good crime/thriller . You may ask, “What’s so different about that? All films of today fall under that category.” What captivated me about the film was that it had a female lead, something which is rarely seen in Indian cinema. It also got me thinking, about how there are “heroines” in films, who have no other job than to flaunt themselves to the audiences and get saved by the “hero”. The recent Surya starrer and letdown, Anjaan is an excellent example of that. It has been recent trend to chose actresses based on their looks rather than their acting abilities. Most “heroines” are used to add a dash of, what Indian filmmakers call, “masala” to the screen. Was it really necessary to have Kajal Agarwal in Thuppaki and Jilla ? Does...

Random Talk: Good Bye to a Star

Image
Yesterday has been one of the worst days in my life. Actor Robin Williams had passed away the day before and I am late in writing my tribute to him, because I couldn’t come to terms with this fact. As most of you know, I have been posting obituaries for the death of famous celebrities, since Paul Walker died. I wrote one for him, and I also wrote one for Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Both of them were great actors. In fact I have many favorite actors. But none of them are as special to me as Robin Williams is. Robin Williams had a gift. The ability to bring joy into people’s life.  And now, sitting at home I have to deal with the fact that he couldn’t find joy in his life. Most people know him as a comedian. And he is recognized as one too, but to me he will always be something more. I have cried after seeing many movies. There are some brilliant filmmakers who can jerk tears over something which happens to a character on the screen.  But I didn’t cry after seeing Good Wi...

Book Review: The Ink-heart Trilogy

Image
Hey people of the Internet!!! So it’s been a while since I have posted any review and there is a valid reason for was……… no there is no valid reason, just plain old laziness. That apart, I have always wanted to review a book. One post for one book. But as it so happened the book I want to review happens to be the last book of a trilogy. So I guess I have to review the trilogy. Without further ado, here is my review of the Ink-heart trilogy written by Cornelia Funke. So like most people who read books, this was recommended to me by my senior from 12th grade. She gave me the first two books of the trilogy Ink-heart and Ink-spell .  Although the premise is simple the plot is not. A guy has powers which can bring any character out of a book he reads and send someone from our world into the book. But the plot is riddled with layers of fantasy, romance (not much) action, and adventure and to top it off lessons of what is morally right and wrong.   The char...

Movie Review: X-Men Days of Future Past

Image
One sentence that describes X men days of future past: This is what amazing Spiderman wishes it could be. Simply WOW!!! One of the top 10 movies I have seen yet in 2014. Welcome back Bryan singer, we missed you. Now I am gonna turn off the nerdy fan-boy side of me which is jumping up and down out of happiness and analyze this film and why it is so good. But before that here are some details about the movie: Cast and Crew: Directed by         Bryan Singer Produced by       Lauren Shuler Donner                            Bryan Singer                            Simon Kinberg                            Hutch Parker Screenplay by  ...

Books and me: Its Complicated…

Image
Hey guys!!! So with this article I wanted to start my book reviews. In this post I will talk about when I started reading. What author made really serious impacts on me, the type of books I prefer to read, what I love, what I hate how long  I read every day  and all the other stuff, which I want to get out of the way before I start dedicating one post to one book. I started reading books at a really young age. I probably got the habit from my parents. Both of them were avid readers and soon I started following in their footsteps. I started reading a lot of books at a very young age. But when I was 8 years old, there was one author, whose books I actively searched for and read. Enid Blyton. When I was in my fourth grade, I had finished around 75 books of her Famous Five and Secret Seven series . So, at that time, Harry Potter was a huge thing. It still is. One day my dad bought The Philosophers Stone home, and I started reading it. But I felt that it was sli...
