Movie Review : Zootopia

Zootopia is one of those rare movies which, although marketed as a children’s movie, it appeals to adults as well. This movie is proves that Walt Disney Animation is back and as good as ever.

The reason why Zootopia appeals to adults is because it deals with complex issues of racism, sexism, friendships, relationships and, oddly enough, even drugs. All of this while still appealing to kids. You may be wondering if that is even possible, because every children's movie now-a -days seem to be getting dumber and dumber to the point where it is considered funny when characters say a one letter word and laugh. Well I'm here to tell you that it is possible, and Zootopia is a prime example of that. So on to the review

Story and Writing:

Zootopia tells the tale of a bunny named Judy Hopps, who becomes the first rabbit police officer of
zootopia where all animals live in harmony, both predator and prey. The story follows her and a fox, Nick Wilde who also happens to be a con man, as they try to find mammals which have gone missing in the city.

What I love about the writing in zootopia is that it is simple enough for kids to understand, but complex enough to not make you feel dumb. Surprisingly it has a few innuendos, which you will miss if you don’t pay attention to the dialogue.

The chemistry between the two leads is amazing partly due to the writing and partly due to the actors who I will get to later. And for once it does not end in a clichéd romance. Thank you god!

What I didn’t like about the story though, was that at times it got a bit predictable especially nearing the ending and there is a definite lull in the pacing at around the halfway mark. After this time certain characters become a bit too predictable, but not stereotypical.

Acting:

The acting, or rather voice acting, in this movie is top notch Ginnifer Goodwin brings a real optimism to officer Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman is lazy and slick as Nick Wilde. But their acting shines when they play off each other. These characters have such good chemistry that it leaves you wanting more of them. Idris Elba as the angry police chief and J K Simmons as the mayor also shine in their roles. And what do you know, Shakira is in this movie!

While I really have no problems with the acting in general, somehow I really didn’t buy Jenny Slate in her role. Not that it is a problem with the film, but more of a personal nitpick I guess.

Cinematography, Editing and Visual Effects:

While nothing ground breaking, the animation is top notch and just what we have come to expect out of Disney. Certain unique animations to each of the characters add so much more to their personalities. The city is vibrant and has this amazing atmosphere all of which come together to craft a visually stunning movie experience. And since this is an animated movie, each scene is edited to perfection, so no qualms there.

Music:

The music is one of the stand outs of Zootopia. Composed by Michael Giacchino, the music has a way of pulling you into this movie and setting the perfect atmosphere. This is one of the few movie soundtracks which I listened to almost immediately after watching the movie. Mr. Michael Giacchino, I take my hat off for you sir.

Final Thoughts:

I went into Zootopia expecting a children’s film, and I was surprised at what I got. This movie made me smile and laugh and I even managed to tear-up in a particular scene. This movie got to me more than I thought it would.

Here is what I took away from the film, and what most of us will take away: Life may not be perfect but if we try hard enough we can achieve whatever we want, irrespective of where we may come from. Certainly a much needed message.

Conclusion:

If you get a chance to watch Zootopia, definitely check it out. It is a movie which, after watching it, you will realize that you have wanted to watch but never knew it.

I give Zootopia an 8 out of 10

Do check it out, you won’t be disappointed. Until next time:

Peace!!!
