Book Review: The Blood Of Olympus



It’s the end of the series guys, and here I am reviewing it. So The Blood of Olympus is the last book in the wonderful Heroes of Olympus series written by Rick Riordan, and it concludes the story of Percy, Annabeth, Jason, Piper, Frank, Hazel, Leo, Reyna and Nico. I am not going to reveal any important plot points and spoil the story, but I’m just going to tell you what I liked and didn’t like about the book.

Pros:
                 It is a great conclusion to the series. It has a spectacular climax; it ties up all the loose ends, and should satisfy most of the fans of the series. The writing is especially witty, and the humor is great, and surprisingly, there are a lot of emotional themes behind it all, and Riordan conveys them very well.

What I really liked about the book is that it cut to the action, and did not make us wait. I mean, we have waited for four books, so I have to give props for that. It also does a good job of maintaining the tension, and manages to keep us guessing. There are a lot of references to other series, which hardcore fans will find fun. And the pace never slackens. That is one of the difficulties of being an author. It is really hard to write fast paced action sequences and to maintain the pace for all the other scenes.

Something I was really looking forward to was reading the new perspectives of Reyna and Nico, and I am happy to say that they do not disappoint. I especially liked Reyna perspective, because it provided this entire back story which gave a lot of depth to her character.

One more thing I have to praise is the action sequences. They are the best I have read in a long time. They are filled with lots of fighting, and humor and it’s all just a treat to read. And, thank the gods; it has a really good ending.

So those are the things I liked about the book, and you can see that it has a lot of good things going on for it.

Cons:

I did find two flaws with the book, but these are more of my complaints rather than genuine flaws. The first one is that I found the removal of Percy and Annabeth’s Perspectives, a little sad. I wanted to know what was going on in their mind, after they escaped out of Tartarus. I really didn’t mind the removal of Frank’s and Hazel’s perspectives.

The second thing I didn’t like was that the ending ended a little abruptly. If that doesn’t make any sense, let me put it this way: The hero wins and it’s happily ever after. I felt that a little more detail after the victory couldn’t have been amiss. But it does nothing to change the overall experience of the story, so that is also not a great fault.

Verdict and Final thoughts:

This is a solid conclusion to a great franchise and I give it a 9.2 on 10. I would recommend it to anyone who is ready to read it.

I certainly feel a little sad that the series has come to an end, and I will definitely miss reading about the adventures of my favorite demigods. But as the saying goes all good things end. And I am not ashamed to embarrassed to admit that I teared up when I realized, after reading the book for a second time, that this saga I have loved so dearly, has come to an end.

But I will continue to read the words of my beloved Uncle Rick and I can’t wait to get my hands on Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.
