Movie Review: Interstellar

Interstellar is a science fiction movie written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher Nolan .(Yup, they are brothers) It stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, and *spoiler alert!!* Matt Damon.

This is Nolan’s first outing as a science fiction director, and to say the least he has done a fantastic job. There are so many great things about this movie, that they mostly outweigh the negatives. But keep in mind, Nolan Fans, this movie does have a few negatives. So please don’t expect me to shower praise endlessly, I will be stating what I didn’t like about the film.

SCREENPLAY

This movie has a really good screenplay, and not one dialogue seemed out of place or unnecessary, or like it was exposition, for that matter. The banter between the protagonists is realistic, and there are a few well written jokes, which I liked. One thing I really liked was the father daughter dynamic between the character Murphy, and her father, Cooper. And most of the scientific banter in the film is mostly understandable, if you know a bit about space, and time. For me the screen play had almost zero defects, and kudos to Jonathan Nolan for that.

STORY

Another strong aspect of the film is the story. Wonderfully put together and well written without any plot holes, this is one of the best stories I have seen on screen.

But the biggest negative of the film also comes from the story. Even though the screenplay tries its hardest to explain what going on to us, some of the events which occur in the story, will take a lot of time for a person who doesn’t know a lot about space to understand. Of course with a complicated story such as this there are a few loose ends which can never be explained, because, the nature and theory explained in the story is such.

One other thing I didn’t like is the fact that there are certain scenes which are made to tug at our heart strings, but only one scene did that to me, and I am against the fact that Nolan went through and didn’t leave those scenes in the editing room floor.

The final thing which I didn’t prefer is the ending. It’s just too happy, it is like everything is wrapped up in a pretty gift and handed to us. As much as I love a happy ending I didn’t think it suited the rest of the film.

CINEMATOGRAPHY AND CGI

This movie is not being released in 3D (thank god for that.) It has been shot in Nolan’s now trademark IMAX style, which he perfected in The Dark Knight Rises. I would describe it as establishing. It has an exhilarating and clear feel to it, and I like it. I wouldn’t prefer all movies shot this way, but I would definitely like to see more movies shot in this style.

Onto the CGI. In a word it is breathtaking. Almost on par with gravity, this is one of the best looking films in terms of CGI. No complaints there.

SOUND

Another great thing about this movie is the sound, and the back ground. The sounds deliver the impact needed with each scene and Hans Zimmer’s score surpasses some of his best works.

CONCLUSION AND VERDICT

A well shot, a well written masterpiece with a few flaws which are noticeable upon closer inspection, Interstellar is a must watch for all fans of Nolan and Science fiction and people who like physics can get their mind blown too. The run time may be a problem for some people, but seeing as it is directed by Nolan whose trademark is always past the two hour mark, I would say it is expected.

My final verdict for this film is an 8.6 on 10. Definitely a film worth checking out.
