Movie Review: Lucy
Lucy is a
science fiction film written and directed by Luc Besseon. It stars Scarlett Johansson
and Morgan Freeman and a few other people who you might recognize. Point is
Scarlett Johansson is the only character who matters.
This review is
going to be different from my other reviews. I won’t be splitting it into
sections. It is just going to be a review with a verdict at the end. You may
think this is because I am lazy, but this is actually because this film doesn’t
have a plot.
Yup, there is no
story to the movie. The movie purely exists to show Scarlett Johansson do cool
stuff as her brain capacity increases from 10 percent to 20 to 30 to 40 and
finally 100. That is basically the story. There is a small subplot, but I stick
with what is said in the beginning, this movie exists purely so that we can see
Scarlett Johansson kick ass.
The
cinematography is good and the CGI is, at best, okay. Again it all ties into
the fact that there is no story to relate all the visuals to. And there is this
national geographic cheetah hunt which is interwoven with the first few minutes
of the film, which is never seen anywhere in the rest of the film. I do get the
parallels which take place on screen, but I didn’t think it was necessary.
The acting in
this movie is okay. Scarlett Johansson plays her role to perfection and Morgan Freeman,
as always provides exposition in his deep voice. The other actors in the film
are functional. This is due to the fact that their characters aren’t developed
that much to begin with.
The dialogues
are not really great. But given there is no story to follow, the only dialogue
uttered is for exposition, and somehow it seemed natural enough to give it a pass.
The concept of
the film is sound. A girl who starts unlocking increasing parts of her brain
and the powers she gains. But my guess is that the director didn’t think the
story through before executing the concept. All in all, Lucy is a movie, which
can be watched if you want to see something cool. Other than that this movie
has no great value.
I give this film a 5 on 10. Check
it out if you’re bored and you want to see something cool.
Peace!!
