Movie Review: The Amazing Spiderman 2

The Amazing Spiderman 2 follows the adventures of Peter Parker A.K.A Spiderman, directly after the events of the first movie. Peter is rocking out as Spiderman and his relationship with Gwen is really strong. Now there is only one question left to be answered: Does The Amazing Spiderman 2 live up to its name?
That’s the question I am going to answer in this review. But before I get on with the review of this film I want to say a few words about the second film in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. It was a master piece. To me that is the benchmark. It is perfect in almost every sense. The story was solid. The action, exiting.  The acting palpable. Overall, the benchmark Spiderman movie. Then came the third movie, which was an all time low. I am happy that they made a reboot, and I am definitely happy of the second Amazing Spiderman. Here is a little info about the actors, directors and writers and everyone who made this movie great…..

Now that that is out of the way I want to give a HUGE spoiler alert to everyone who wants to read this. I will post a caption when the spoilers end.  I will write a spoiler full paragraph describing the movie and I will, after the spoilers, tell you about the movie in three parts. It will be separated into story, acting and cinematography. But from here…..

MEGA SPOILER ALERT!!!!

The movie starts out with Peter’s father destroying all his research and there are a few scenes from the first movie. They drop peter off at his aunt’s house and they it cuts to them on a plane. Richard Parker is uploading the files from his laptop to “Roosevelt”. The pilot kills the co pilot and puts on a parachute and tries to leave with the laptop and a struggle ensues in which Mary Parker is shot. Richard shoots a window and finishes uploading the files before the door of the plane hits the engine and it crashes.

The movie cuts to Spiderman, in his prime, fighting crime and having fun. He stops Aleksei Sytsevich from stealing plutonium vials and makes it in the nick of time to his graduation ceremony. After graduation Peter and Gwen agree to meet up but Peter is reminded of his promise to Gwen’s father and breaks off their relationship in the fear of hurting Gwen.

Meanwhile Harry Osborn returns to meet his terminally ill father, who reveals to him that a disease is running in the Osborn family and Harry will die if he doesn’t find a cure. At Oscorp Max Dillon is an electrical engineer who is a great fan of Spiderman and when he is saved by him in the beginning of the film thinks that he is his friend. He is involved in an accident t involving electricity and becomes Electro.

Peter tries to maintain a friendship with Gwen, when she reveals to him that she has received a scholarship at Oxford. When they start talking about it Electro causes a blackout in Times Square. When peter, as Spiderman intervenes, Electro becomes angry at Spiderman as the police shoot him while he is taking to Spiderman. A fight ensues and Electro is subdued using water and sent to Ravencroft institute.

Harry learns that he needs the blood of Spiderman to survive and tries to make him give it to him. But when Spiderman refuses he becomes angry at him for not helping him. He gets framed for the “death” of Max Dillon and is taken out of his position as CEO. He breaks Electro out to of prison and makes a deal with him to see Spiderman killed. He learns that reserve of the spider venom has been stored at Oscorp and he injects himself with it and becomes Green Goblin. Electro shuts off the city’s power grid and causes a blackout. Spiderman leaves to fight him, after promising Gwen that he will go to England with her. Spiderman with the help of Gwen defeats Electro. Then Harry arrives and seeing Gwen, he figures out that Peter is Spiderman. Harry kidnaps Gwen and throws her from a height. Spiderman subdues harry and tries to save Gwen but fails.

The moment when Gwen dies was well shot and it was the most powerful moment in the movie. I almost got emotional. Harry is sent to Ravencroft, where the man in the shadows, from the first film, meets him and there is a talk about the sinister six.

In the end of the film Peter is inspired by Gwen’s speech and sets out to stop Rhino who is on a rampage.

MEGA SPOILER ALERT ENDS HERE!!!

Now that I have told you the story I will pick apart the cinematography, acting and story. Let’s start with the….

Story:
The story is pretty solid. The loose ends left in the first movie are tied. The story arc of Peter’s parents comes to an end. Even though the first film had the caption the untold story, this film has that story. But what I do feel is that this part was unnecessary. It practically tells you the thing you already know, that is Oscorp is a weapons manufacturer and it shouldn’t be trusted with new discoveries. The romance in this movie is really well done and there are a few moments where you say to yourself, that’s pretty good writing. But the story lacks an overall sequence. I think that the last fight could have gone in the first and a few scenes could have been cut. The villains were managed well, but in my opinion there are only 2 villains and not 3 as the poster suggests. The story has its ups and downs but it still manages to deliver when it matters most.

The story gets an average score of 7/10

Acting:
The acting in this movie is top notch. Andrew, my opinion is the best actor to portray Spiderman. He is witty, funny and loveable. Emma Stone as Gwen rocks. The chemistry between real life couple Andrew and Emma can be seen on screen. Emma Stone is an actress to look out for. Dane DeHann….. Where can I start with this guy? This guy has talent. He is a powerful screen presence and there was one scene towards the end where he truly shines. Jamie Fox is great as electro. You truly sympathize with Max Dillon. The acting in this film is top notch.

The acting gets an 8.5/10

Cinematography:
The visual effects in this film are really good. I loved all the fight sequences. The music by  Hans Zimmer was great. Stunts were better than the first film. Overall the look of the film was great.  But I still have a problem with the sequence of events. The best scene in this movie was the one which happens in this clock tower and you feel everything going on. That was awesome.

The cinematography gets an 8/10

The things I liked:
The acting was great, the action was fun the, characters strong and it was a really fun film to watch. You will not regret watching it in the theaters.

The things I didn’t like:
The movie is a fair bit long and a few scenes were a bit dragged out. And as I said before the sequence of events in the film could have been arranged in a different way.

The final verdict:
Being an avid Spiderman fan and hating Batman, even though dark night was a good film, I think The Amazing Spiderman 2 holds its place in superhero movies. I am looking forward to the Sinister 6 film, the Venom spin-off and the third installment in Mark Webb's Spiderman series.

If you are a fan of superheroes, definitely go see it. If you want a fun movie, go see it. If you are a Spidey fan like me, don’t miss it. If you want a moving film with ground breaking story and emotionally moving acting, this is not your cup of tea.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 gets a promising score of 7.5/10
