Random Talk :State of Tamil filmaking

I saw Vallavanukum Pullum Ayidhuyam, and I have been balling up this huge wad of anger and resentment which has burst out in this post.

Having seen the trailer for the movie during the beginning of The Amazing Spiderman, I had this gut feeling that the movie….would not be good. But nonetheless we booked the tickets and went to the night show hoping to get at least a few laughs. To put it kindly, this movie is DOGSHIT. I don’t want to name the movie for what it actually is because that would have a lot of really bad language.

Let me tell you the good stuff, in this movie. You know credit where credits due. Where can I start….there is so much to say (note the sarcasm). The bad guy is a good actor. But that doesn’t mean he does the film any good. And there is one slapstick joke that made me laugh. And then there was……wait there was……. There was this one thing……….. Nope there was nothing more. My bad J

Let’s get to the bad stuff. Bad acting, terrible dialogue, bad cinematography, bad jokes, meaningless songs, a stereotypical love interest, ripped off music, bad green screen, terrible “graphics”, and the most shittiest of plots. The film itself doesn’t know what genre it is supposed to be, a big-time blockbuster, a comedy or an action love story (as if we don’t have enough of that.)

If it’s the third part then don’t cast a comedian as a hero. It is the shittiest decision of the decade. Make a comedy movie with him. It worked out with Vadivelu. If it’s the second, somebody please murder me. I have seen better dialogues in short films on YouTube. If it’s the first then all movie goers who like Tamil movies in general should go hang themselves knowing what Tamil filmmaking has sunk to.

I will be the first to accept that I love Hollywood movies more than Tamil movies, but that doesn’t mean that I hate good Tamil movies. I just like it when they are grounded into reality and the heroes like Vijay and Surya are not jumping and defying the laws of physics left and right. I loved Yudham Sei, I loved Muran, Vishwaroopam was a masterpiece, I even liked Ayan, albeit the needless songs. These are "A "class movies, which are under appreciated because they don’t have the usual songs with good-looking women flaunting and songs about drinking and all the unwanted jokes about intercourse. In fact I even liked Kalyana Samiyal Sadham. It was controversial, yes but the way it dealt with the topic was good. For a good comedy movie there is 23rd Pulukesi.

We have a sea of really good filmmakers with creative talent, which we will never see because all the funding goes to unwanted bullshit. And I haven’t even gotten to the graphics in the yet. This movie has the worst green screen and animation I have seen in decades. We are in an age where actors are digitally recreated. You have no excuse using shitty green screen and bad graphics. Imagine knowing that the whole of the Times Square segment in The Amazing Spiderman was green screen and seeing a really bad green screen editing. To put it in perspective imagine touching a puppy. Now imagine touching a crude drawing which is supposed to be a puppy. That’s the difference. Its crap. Period.

Now that I started talking about graphics, I am flabbergasted at how CHEAP Kochadiyan is looking. And it is supposed to be motion capture. I have one word for you “AVATAR”. Let’s be honest, you may be a Rajinikanth fan, but the movie looks like an animation movie. And the Soundariya Rajinikanth said in an interview that he makers of Avatar were impressed. Come on who do you think you are shitting on. There are no particle effects, there is a discord between the characters and the environment, the landscape is barren, the actors look like wax models and downright ugly. Avatar was shot in a big green room. This was shot in god knows where with a humungous budget. And please don’t tell me you don’t have the equipment or the people who can do a good job. No, the movie is a money grab. And in my opinion it is not worth our spending precious money to see a terribly lip synched Rajinikanth and an alien in the form of Deepika Pudokone dancing.

This tradition of making shitty movies will go on and as long as we pay money to see bad films the film industry is going to keep pumping them out. Please do not go and see this movie in the theaters. I am begging of you. Trust me on this, guys. And those of you who have a problem with me hating Kochadiyan, please watch any animation movie in the world and honestly tell me that they look worse than Kochadiyan. I know that this rant in not going to change the film industry overnight, but guys remember it all comes down to us. We are putting the money in their hands.
